MACHINING 300 TONNE TORPEDO CAR TRUNNION JOURNALS AT A UK STEELWORKS

In-Situ Machining Solutions (UK) Ltd were awarded the contract to machine two journals on a Torpedo Car. These diameters had excessive wear of up to 7-8mm on radius due to many years of arduous work rendering it unusable.

A certain amount of bespoke equipment was manufactured in the In-Situ Machining workshop to re-establish new datums and the machining of a 50mm radius in both corners. Standard orbital ring and polishing equipment was utilised for the remainder of the task.

20mm was removed from the diameter of the 680mm x 680mm long journal to make good. The 50mm radii were then machined by means of a radiusing attachment. A final polishing operation was implemented. The project was completed within budget and well within the allocated time schedule.
